Scotland throws away a shocking 600,000 mattresses every year – yet fewer than 10% are recycled or reused. The heart-breaking truth? Most of these mattresses still have years of life left in them. Instead of burning or burying them, we could be giving them a second chance to change lives.
Thanks to funding from the Scottish Government’s Recycling Improvement Fund, Stella’s Voice and Instant Neighbour are breathing new life into discarded mattresses. Using state-of-the-art cleaning and disinfection equipment, we’re able to transform what would have been landfill waste into safe, high-quality reusable items.

Stella’s Voice CEO Mark Morgan said: “Demand on our services has never been greater—both locally and overseas. We respond to referrals from local authorities, including Aberdeenshire Council as well as other charities or agencies, to support people with emergency re-housing essentials such as mattresses or other furniture.”
Instant Neighbour’s Business Development Manager, Susan Cheyne, added: “We’re thrilled to be working with Stella’s Voice on our new Mattress Cleaning Project!
Together, we’re saving more mattresses from landfill and giving them a fresh start with deep cleaning. That means even more quality, affordable reuse items our customers can trust.”
