Christmas 2019 saw another sharp increase in the use of Instant Neighbour’s foodbank with the week before Christmas being our busiest week since the corresponding week in 2017 (when Universal Credit was introduced in Aberdeen) and our 2nd busiest week ever as a foodbank with 197 parcels handed out during the 25 hours the foodbank was open that week.
During December, over 600 parcels were handed out to those in need with over a quarter of these requests coming from families with young children. As has been the trend of the last year, approximately 10% of the parcels issued have been to new clients registering to use the foodbank for a variety of reasons – issues with benefits, financial difficulties arising from little or no income and family emergencies to name a few – and adding the amount of people receiving emergency food aid to the amount of named children who received a gift via our Giving Tree Appeal, more than 8,000 people were given practical help over the festive period.
Of course this help we offer is only possible with the ongoing support from yourselves, so a humbled heartfelt THANK YOU to the people of Aberdeenand the Shire for your continued generosity and fantastic donations which truly give the team at Instant Neighbour the opportunity to offer real help today and hope for tomorrow.
Evan, Community Connector at Instant Neighbour
